Derby del Madrid

Another important derby day unfolded in Madrid as Real Madrid hosted Atlético Madrid at the iconic Santiago Bernabéu Stadium.

Atlético lined up with their usual starting XI, while the home side was without key stars Kylian Mbappé and Jude Bellingham. Both teams were also missing their first goalkeepers, Thibaut Courtois and Jan Oblak, due to injury.

Heading into the clash, Real Madrid had won 23 of the previous 55 meetings between the two sides, compared to Atlético’s 15 victories. The expectations were particularly high for Madrid, who are battling with Barcelona for the league title, while Atlético sits fourth in the table.

The atmosphere at the Bernabéu was far more intense than a regular match. The fans were louder, more passionate, and fully aware of the importance of the game.

From the first whistle, Real Madrid looked sharp and effective, exploiting spaces in Atlético’s setup and creating early chances. The energy from the crowd clearly boosted the home side. Both teams came close to scoring early on, with efforts from Federico Valverde and Marcos Llorente. Llorente’s attempt, followed by a brief moment on the ground, followed by  the crowd’s reaction and added to the tension.

As the game progressed, Atlético’s defensive structure made it difficult for Madrid to find clear opportunities. This tactical shift paid off when Lookman finished a move he helped to create, giving Atlético the lead in the 33rd minute. Real Madrid responded immediately, pushing forward in search of an equalizer before halftime.

After the half, Mbappé began warming up, signaling a potential turning point. Madrid increased the pressure and were eventually rewarded with a penalty, which Vinícius Júnior calmly converted. The equalizer helped Madrid’s confidence, and they soon took the lead after a defensive mistake from Atlético, with Valverde finding the net. Arbeloa’s side made attacking substitutions, bringing on players including Mbappé.

However, Atlético were not done. In the 67th minute, Molina scored a brilliant equalizer. The game remained highly competitive, but Madrid quickly responded once again, as Vinícius Júnior scored his second goal in the 72nd minute. The match took another dramatic turn when Valverde received a second yellow card and was sent off in the 77th minute, leaving Madrid to defend their lead with ten men.

In the closing stages, Atlético pushed hard for another equalizer, creating several dangerous chances. However, their efforts were either denied by Lunin or failed to hit the target. At the final whistle, the 3–2 result secured an amazing victory for Real Madrid, sending the Bernabéu into celebration once again after another unforgettable Madrid derby.
